Dr. Mark Mulder Discusses "Shades of White Flight"

Dr. Mark Mulder, Trinity alumnnus and professor of sociology at Calvin University, joined the Trinity community for a series of conversations on November 11, 2021, hosted by the Center for Teaching and the Good Life in collaboration with the Provost’s office, Faculty Development Committee, and the Trinity Honors Program.

Dr. Mulder’s research interests include urban studies, religion, race, and the concept of “place.” Dr. Mulder is also the author of Shades of White Flight: Evangelical Congregations and Urban Departure, which the Trinity staff and faculty read together over the summer 2022 semester. Dr. Mulder joined us on campus to speak about his book to a variety of audiences – 

Author Conversation, sponsored by the Trinity Faculty Development Committee
Faculty and staff gathered to listen to a brief book talk by Dr. Mulder before engaging in conversation about the research process behind Shades of White Flight and what modern-day Christians can learn from the history the book presents.

Lunch Conversation with Faculty and Staff, hosted by the Center
Faculty and staff were invited to join the Center and Dr. Mulder for lunch and conversation around the Center’s guiding question, “how can we ensure our vision of vocation is accessible to all human beings?”

Author Conversation with Honors Students, hosted by the Trinity Honors Program
Students in Trinity’s Honors program who are currently reading Shades of White Flight were invited to hear a book talk from Dr. Mulder and engage in conversation afterwards.

Public Lecture, hosted by the Provost’s Office
Dr. Mulder offered a public lecture to the Trinity community, entitled “Shades of White Flight: Reckoning with Racialized Legacies.”
